The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of planned road closures and lane restrictions in the Hampton Roads District for the week of July 6-12, 2025. These closures are necessary for ongoing maintenance and construction projects across various highways, bridges, and tunnels.
During the holiday travel period from noon on July 3 to noon on July 7, VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and major roads in Virginia. However, travelers should be aware that scheduled closures are subject to change due to weather conditions or other factors.
For detailed information about lane closures throughout Hampton Roads, individuals can visit VDOT’s website at 511.vdot.virginia.gov or use the VDOT 511 smartphone app.
Among the notable closures is the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664, which will have alternating mobile single-lane closures in both directions from July 7-10 during nighttime hours. Additionally, there will be single-lane southbound closures on July 8 during daytime hours.
On Route 17 at the James River Bridge, single-lane southbound closures are scheduled for July 7-8 overnight. Alternating mobile single-lane closures will occur in both directions from July 9-10 during daytime hours.
The George P. Coleman Bridge will also experience alternating mobile single-lane closures in both directions on July 8 and again on July 9 during daytime hours.
Full ramp closures are planned for I-64 west to I-464 north (exit 291A) in Chesapeake from July 7-10 overnight. In Virginia Beach, full on-ramp closures from Indian River Road to I-64 east are scheduled for the same dates during nighttime hours.
Several long-term traffic shifts and lane reductions continue along I-64 as part of various expansion projects. For instance, temporary traffic shifts remain in place near Route 199/Lightfoot (exit 234) with ongoing construction activities affecting travel lanes.
In Norfolk, multiple brief intermittent stoppages are expected along I-64 east and west between Bay Avenue and Tidewater Drive (exit 277), occurring nightly from July 7-11.
The HREL Newport News/Hampton project involves multiple lane closures along sections of I-64 east and west between J. Clyde Morris Boulevard (exit 258) and Mercury Boulevard (exit 263).
Travelers should also note full Express Lane closure westbound between I-264 (exit 284) and the Bowers Hill interchange (exit 299) scheduled for overnight hours on July 9. Eastbound Express Lane closure is set for overnight hours on July 10 between these exits as well.
These roadworks aim to improve infrastructure but may cause delays; motorists are advised to plan accordingly by checking real-time updates through available resources provided by VDOT.
