The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of roadwork projects and lane closures scheduled for the Fredericksburg District from November 30 to December 6, 2025. The work will affect several counties and cities, including Caroline, King George, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Westmoreland, Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, Lancaster, Mathews, Northumberland, and the City of Fredericksburg.

In Caroline County, single lane closures are planned on Route 1 between Route 639 (Ladysmith Road) and Route 207 (Rogers Clark Boulevard) for utility work. Guardrail installation will also cause alternating traffic on Route 600 (Frog Level Road). In the City of Fredericksburg, Fall Hill Avenue will see right lane and shoulder closures due to road widening and intersection improvements.

The Falmouth Bridge area at Route 1 in both Fredericksburg and Stafford County will have overnight alternating lane closures for pothole patching and concrete repairs. King George County will experience guardrail installations on Route 218 near Little Ferry Road as well as bridge inspections over Machodoc Creek.

Richmond County’s Route 360 eastbound near Newland Road will undergo guardrail installation. In Spotsylvania County, multiple projects are underway: underdrain installation at Hickory Ridge Road on Route 1; fiber installation between Mudd Tavern/Morris Road in Spotsylvania and Ladysmith Road in Caroline; intermittent closures on Route 3 for fiber work; guardrail installation near Plank Road; water main work on Tidewater Trail; road widening on Harrison Road; milling and paving in Breezewood subdivision; among others.

Stafford County’s Route 17 is set for median improvements between Poplar Road and Hartwood Church Road as well as fiber installation toward the Fauquier County line. Guardrail installation is also scheduled for Route 610 westbound near Groves Lane.

Additional ongoing construction includes the rehabilitation of the northbound Route 207 bridge over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County—northbound traffic remains diverted until project completion expected in April 2026. Intersection improvement projects continue at key locations along Route 1 in Fredericksburg with anticipated completion by June 2026.

Other major efforts include bridge replacements such as Cheaneys Bridge Road over Dragon Run Creek in Essex County (closed until May 2026), Rock Spring Road over Exol Swamp in King and Queen County (reopening Dec. 2025), Kamps Mill Road over Camps Millpond in Lancaster County (closed pending emergency repairs), Havelock Road over Scates Mill Stream in Richmond County (closed through spring 2026), as well as rehabilitation projects like the $3.5 million effort to improve the condition of the Route 14 bridge over North End Branch in Mathews County (completion June 2026).

Gardy’s Mill Road at Gardy’s Millpond remains closed due to a dam breach affecting both Northumberland and Westmoreland counties with no reopening date announced yet.

Spotsylvania’s I-95 Exit 126 area is undergoing significant upgrades including widening of lanes along with noise barrier construction—projected completion is September 2027. Harrison Road reconstruction aims to expand capacity by late summer next year while new sidewalks and pedestrian crossings are being added.

In Stafford County, intersection realignment at Telegraph Road/Woodstock Lane continues with new signals being installed; improvements at Courthouse/Bells Hill/Hope Roads aim to widen lanes with enhanced pedestrian facilities—both projects are locally administered by Stafford County with respective completions targeted for fall/summer of coming years.
