The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that it will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and major roads in Virginia for holiday travel. The suspension begins at noon on Wednesday, November 26, and lasts until noon on Monday, December 1. VDOT stated, “VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia for holiday travel beginning noon, Wednesday, Nov. 26 until noon, Monday, Dec. 1. The weekly alert details scheduled full closures of interstates, ramps, bridges, primary roads, as well as lane closures at bridge-tunnels including the Berkley, Coleman, High Rise and James River bridges. These schedules are subject to change depending on weather or other factors.

Among the notable scheduled works:
– The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (I-64) will have single-lane westbound closures from November 23 to November 24 during nighttime hours.
– Alternating single-lane closures are planned for both directions of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) between November 24 and November 25 overnight.
– The James River Bridge (Route 17) will see southbound single-lane closures during daytime hours from November 24 to November 25.

Interstate projects include:
– I-64 Gap Segment C Widening in James City County with nightly single-lane closures between New Kent County-James City County line and Route 199/Lightfoot through November 25.
– Long-term temporary traffic shifts continue along I-64 east and west near Lightfoot Park and Ride in York County.
Work associated with Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL):
– Full ramp closures on I-64 as part of HREL Hampton 4C Project from November 23 to November 25 overnight; several off-ramp locations affected include Armistead Avenue/LaSalle Avenue (exit 265B), Rip Rap Road/Armistead Avenue/Langley AFB (exit 265C), Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 267), as well as related long-term changes to traffic patterns.
On I-64 Norfolk segments:
– Alternating single-lane closures from Granby Street to Chesapeake Boulevard starting evening of November 21 through early morning of November 24; similar activities extend through adjacent days with various off-ramp restrictions.
Additionally:
– Full closure is scheduled for Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes continuously over parts of the weekend into early next week.
Other significant activities include ramp work on I-464 in Chesapeake during daytime hours between Dominion Boulevard north to I-464 north from November 24 through November 26.
In Accomack and Northampton counties along Route 13 there will be alternating single-lane northbound closures during daylight hours from John Taylor Road to Temperanceville Road and Cedar Grove Road to Parsons Circle respectively around Thanksgiving week.
