The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a public hearing to discuss plans for a new roundabout at the intersection of Route 24 and Hardy Road in Vinton. The project aims to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve traffic flow.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will take place at the Charles R. Hill Community Center located at 820 East Washington Avenue in Vinton. The format will be an open house, allowing attendees to engage with VDOT representatives who will be available to answer questions.

The proposed project involves replacing the current signalized intersection with a one-lane roundabout featuring three slip lanes. Additionally, the entrance to the bank property at this intersection will be relocated approximately 110 feet west, and a new exit will be added on Roop Street.

To accommodate pedestrians, crosswalks with median islands are planned for Bypass Road and Hardy Road. New sidewalks will also connect with existing pedestrian pathways. During construction, southbound traffic on Bypass Road that currently turns left onto Hardy Road will face detours lasting about four to six months.

Public comments on the project can be submitted during the hearing or until May 30, 2025. Feedback should be directed to Hayden Hill, Project Manager, at 731 Harrison Avenue, Salem VA 24153 or via email at hayden.hill@VDOT.Virginia.gov with “Hardy Road Roundabout Vinton” as the subject heading.
