The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on March 27 that double lane closures and ramp detours will take place along Interstate 95 in Henrico County from Sunday, March 29 through Saturday, April 4, as crews repair the Parham Road and Dumbarton Road overpasses, weather permitting.

The scheduled work includes nightly double lane closures on southbound I-95 at mile marker 83 near the Parham Road overpass from Sunday night until Wednesday morning. During this period, the westbound Parham Road ramp to southbound I-95 will also be closed. Traffic will be rerouted via northbound U.S. 1 (Brook Road) to southbound I-295 before returning to southbound I-95.

Additionally, nightly double lane closures are planned at mile marker 81 at the Dumbarton Road overpass during two periods: from Sunday night through Wednesday morning and again from Thursday night through Saturday morning. The northbound and southbound Brook Road ramps to southbound I-95 will be closed with posted detours directing drivers via eastbound Parham Road or alternate routes including Wilmer Avenue and Chamberlayne Road.

Motorists are advised to slow down in work zones and follow all posted detour signs. For questions about the project, VDOT encourages calls to its customer service center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623). Up-to-date traffic information is available through Virginia’s travel information system at 511Virginia, on its mobile app or by calling 511 within Virginia.

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels across the state as part of a safe transportation system. The agency manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country with tens of thousands of lane-miles statewide according to VDOT. Its services include highway maintenance, traffic management such as Virginia 511 alerts, oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to VDOT, as well as planning construction projects across its extensive network according to VDOT.

VDOT has evolved since its origins in a State Highway Commission formed in 1906 into an agency overseeing much of Virginia’s expanding transportation infrastructure according to VDOT. The department’s headquarters is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to VDOT.
