The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly traffic alert for the Fredericksburg District, covering December 14 to 20, 2025. The notice details planned lane closures and ongoing construction projects across several counties.
In Caroline County, utility work will cause right lane closures on Route 1 between Ladysmith Road and Rogers Clark Boulevard from Monday to Friday during daytime hours. On Route 301 northbound, tree trimming will result in single lane closures between Main Fort Walker Gate and Port Royal throughout the week.
For the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County, alternating lane closures are scheduled on Route 1 at Falmouth Bridge overnight from Sunday through Thursday for pothole patching and concrete repairs. Chatham Bridge’s sidewalk will be closed Tuesday morning for bridge work.
Bridge washing operations in Essex County will take place nightly on Route 17 and Route 637 over Occupacia Creek. In King William County, Eltham Bridge maintenance will require single lane closures on Route 30 over the Pawmunkey River Sunday through Thursday nights.
Richmond County drivers can expect single lane closures on Route 360 eastbound near Newland Road from Monday to Wednesday due to guardrail installation.
In Spotsylvania County, multiple projects are underway:
– Lane and shoulder closures on Route 1 between Mudd Tavern/Morris Road and Ladysmith Road for fiber installation.
– Signal work causing alternating lane closures at the intersection of Route 1 and Southpoint Parkway.
– Intermittent single lane and shoulder closures along portions of Route 3 for fiber installation.
– Nighttime water main installation affecting lanes on Tidewater Trail (Route 2/17).
– Ongoing road widening with flagger-controlled traffic on Harrison Road (Route 620) between Gordon Road and Old Plank Road.
– Fiber installation resulting in intermittent closures along Mine Road (Route 636).
Stafford County’s scheduled work includes:
– Traffic signal upgrades leading to alternating lane closures at various intersections along Route 1.
– Median improvements and fiber installation bringing alternating northbound/southbound lane closures along sections of Route 17.
– Courthouse Road interchange signal work with alternating lanes at Austin Ridge Drive.
– Rock Hill Church Road (Route 644) closing near Aquia Creek starting December 17 for tree removal; a detour will be in effect until December 22.
Major ongoing projects include rehabilitation of the northbound bridge over Mattaponi River on Route 207 in Caroline County—northbound traffic is rerouted until project completion expected in April 2026. Intersection improvements continue at key locations in Fredericksburg, with completion targeted by June next year.
Other significant works involve bridge replacements or safety upgrades across Essex, Gloucester, Lancaster, Mathews, Northumberland/Westmoreland, Richmond Counties; some routes remain closed with posted detours as new infrastructure is installed or repaired.
Spotsylvania’s I-95 Exit 126 area sees expansion efforts including additional turn lanes, noise barriers, auxiliary interstate lanes—all set for completion by September 2027. Harrison Road reconstruction continues with widened travel lanes and new sidewalks slated for late summer 2026 finish.
Stafford projects include realignment of intersections at Telegraph Road/Woodstock Lane as well as widening initiatives around Courthouse Road/Bells Hill/Hope Roads; these are locally administered by Stafford County with completions anticipated by fall 2026 or summer 2027 respectively.
