The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on June 3 that double lane closures will take place tonight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. along southbound Interstate 95 at mile marker 74 for repairs to the James River Bridge in Richmond. Motorists are advised to expect significant delays during the overnight hours and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Drivers seeking information or wishing to report hazardous road conditions can contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov or calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation serves as a state agency overseeing the planning, construction, and maintenance of Virginia’s road, bridge, and tunnel systems. The department manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems, covering tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia, and provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511, and oversight of land-use permits along state routes.

The department’s purpose centers on building, maintaining, and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges, and tunnels to support a safe and efficient transportation system. VDOT has its headquarters at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond and developed from the State Highway Commission established in 1906 through various iterations to manage Virginia’s expanding transportation infrastructure, according to the official website.
