The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) has opened the application period for the spring round of the Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Infrastructure Grant program. This initiative aims to support local investments that assist small-scale farmers and food producers in expanding their operations.
The projects eligible for these grants should enhance local food production and forestry and demonstrate a broad community benefit. Areas of priority include food hubs, farmers’ markets, commercial kitchens, and facilities for processing meats, dairy, produce, or other Virginia-grown products. The grant funds are intended primarily for capital expenditures.
Eligible applicants include political subdivisions of the Commonwealth, such as counties, cities, towns, industrial and economic development authorities, or planning district commissions. The grants cap at $50,000, with applications due by 5 p.m. on April 30, 2025.
A matching cash contribution from the locality is a requirement, although economically distressed localities may qualify for a reduced match. Localities are encouraged to coordinate with farmers, food producers, and local food systems advocates to enhance local food and farming infrastructure.
This grant program was established in 2021 and features two funding rounds per fiscal year. The fall round targets awards by December 31, while the spring round seeks a June 30 announcement.
