VCU women’s tennis won the Atlantic 10 Championship with a narrow 4-3 victory over Fordham in Orlando, Fla., on April 25. The match was decided by late singles wins and a final-court clinch that secured the title for VCU.
The outcome highlights VCU’s continued success in the conference, marking its second consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship and sixth in eight seasons. Both teams entered the final with undefeated records in conference play, setting up a closely contested match between league rivals.
In doubles play, VCU claimed victories on Courts 2 and 3 to secure the opening point. On Court 3, one pair improved their season record to 12-9 with a decisive win, while another duo turned an early deficit into a win on Court 2. The match on Court 1 was tied when it was left unfinished.
Fordham responded strongly in singles competition by tying the score and later taking leads through wins on Courts 5 and 6. However, VCU answered back as Andrade delivered straight-set victories to restore momentum. Ibrahim then fought through challenging sets on Court 3 to win her match after coming from behind multiple times, leveling the overall score at three matches each.
With everything resting on the final court, Magallanes overcame an early setback and weather delays before winning four straight games after play resumed to claim both her match and the championship for VCU.
Looking ahead, VCU will learn its first-round opponent for the NCAA Tournament when brackets are announced.
