VCU sets new record for conference wins with victory over Rhode Island

VCU defeated Rhode Island 14-11 on April 12, setting a new program record for conference wins in a single season. The game took place in Kingston, Rhode Island, and improved VCU’s record to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.

This win marks an important milestone for VCU’s women’s lacrosse program, as the team surpassed its previous best of five conference victories set in 2018. Achieving six conference wins demonstrates the team’s progress during its eleven-year history.

During the match, VCU started strong by scoring the first goal and establishing a 5-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. The team led by four goals midway through the second quarter before Rhode Island responded with four unanswered goals to tie at halftime. In the third quarter, both teams traded goals until VCU pulled ahead with three consecutive scores to secure an advantage they maintained for the rest of the game.

One player scored a game-high four goals and surpassed her career milestone of more than one hundred points. Two other players each contributed three goals while another recorded four assists. Defensively, one player collected six draw controls and caused two turnovers. Overall, VCU outshot Rhode Island both in total attempts (28-23) and shots on goal (23-18). For Rhode Island, Kate Cumins led her team with four goals.

Looking ahead, VCU will travel to play Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, April 18 in Merion Station, Pennsylvania. The upcoming match will be available via streaming on ESPN+.
