The VCU Rams women’s track and field team competed in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., and the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., as their final preparation before the upcoming conference championships, according to an April 19 announcement.
This meet provided an opportunity for both sprinters and jumpers at UVA, while distance runners and throwers participated at Georgia Tech. The event served as a tune-up ahead of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships.
Highlights from the competition included new personal records in both sprints and distance events. In the sprints, one athlete set a personal record (PR) in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.91 seconds, while another achieved a season best of 11.92 seconds. In hurdles events, competitors posted times of 1:02.49 in the 400-meter hurdles and times of 14.70 seconds and 14.24 seconds respectively in separate heats of the 100-meter hurdles. Another runner finished seventh overall in the women’s 400-meter dash with a time of 54.33 seconds.
In distance races at Georgia Tech, one competitor completed the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 4:51.34, while another set her own PR by finishing in 4:51.67.
Field events saw strong performances as well: two athletes competed in long jump with marks of 5.87 meters and 5.58 meters; another finished ninth overall in triple jump at a distance of 12.40 meters; meanwhile, Pereira placed second (57.50m) and Casiraghi fourth (56.33m) among hammer throwers; Matalatala took second place (14.06m) while Akaolisa finished fourth (13.80m) in shot put.
The Rams now look forward to competing at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships hosted by George Mason University on May 2nd through May 3rd.
