VCU men’s tennis defeated Saint Joseph’s 4-0 on Apr. 18 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Rams secured the doubles point and won three singles matches to sweep their opponent during Senior Day.
The result keeps VCU unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play and extends their all-time record against Saint Joseph’s to 7-0. The match also marked a significant moment for the team as they honored their seniors while maintaining momentum heading into postseason play.
Head Coach Dimi Kutrovsky said, “Glad we were able to defend home court on senior day. Good doubles, and we stayed tough in the big moments. Shows some growth even if we didn’t play our best tennis we were able to get the win. Looking forward to a-10 next week!”
In doubles action, Mats Bredschneijder and Leon Zaorski won on Court 2 with a score of 6-4, while Alfred Almasi and Nicolo Consonni took Court 3 with a commanding 6-2 victory. The match on Court 1 was tied when it was stopped.
During singles play, Patrik Petera delivered a strong performance with a straight-set win (6-1, 6-1) on Court 5. Consonni followed with a hard-fought victory (6-3, 7-6) on Court 3 after holding off his opponent in a second-set tiebreaker. Gevorg Mnatsakanyan clinched the overall match for VCU by winning on Court 1 (6-1, 7-6), overcoming an early deficit in the second set before closing out the tiebreak decisively.
Other matches involving Almasi, Bredschneijder, and Zaorski were unfinished but showed promising starts for VCU players before play was halted.
Looking ahead, VCU will travel to Orlando for the Atlantic 10 Tournament as they aim to continue their strong run within conference competition.
