VCU men’s tennis defeated Duquesne 4-1 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va., on Apr. 16, keeping its perfect record in Atlantic 10 conference play.

The result is significant as it maintains VCU’s undefeated status within the conference and extends its all-time record against Duquesne to seven wins with no losses. The Rams now hold a season record of 7-13, while Duquesne falls to 7-9.

VCU controlled the match from start to finish, winning the doubles point after victories by Mats Bredschneijder and Leon Zaorski on Court 2 (6-2), and Gevorg Mnatsakanyan and Patrik Petera on Court 1 (6-3). In singles play, Bredschneijder secured a straight-set win on Court 2 (6-0, 6-3), followed by Petera’s dominant performance on Court 5 (6-2, 6-1). Alfred Almasi clinched the overall victory for VCU with a win on Court 3 (6-2, 6-2).

Coach Dimi Kutrovsky said: “Took care of business today. Not always easy to beat teams you’re supposed to beat, I think we did a good job overall of taking care of our courts and handling some heat. Looking forward to finishing at home on Saturday and preparing for the A-10 tournament.”

Other matches were trending in VCU’s favor before being halted. On Court 1, Mnatsakanyan split sets with Enrique Lana before their match was stopped; Mantach held a lead in his second set after dropping the first in a tiebreaker.

The Rams will next host Saint Joseph’s for their regular season finale during Senior Night.
