Virginia Commonwealth University lost to the University of Richmond with a score of 8-4, according to an April 25 announcement. The game took place at The Diamond in Richmond, Virginia, where VCU dropped the road series against its Atlantic 10 Conference rival.
The outcome is significant as it affects both teams’ standings within the conference. VCU now holds a record of 22-20 overall and 11-9 in conference play, while Richmond improves to 25-18 overall and 12-8 in the conference.
During the game, Jacob Lee hit his twelfth home run of the season for VCU, tying him at ninth on VCU’s single-season home run list for a second consecutive year. Lee also moved into sixth place on the program’s all-time career home run leaderboard. Nick Flores reached his one-hundredth career hit during a three-for-four performance at bat that included his fifteenth double this season and a home run for his milestone hit. Out of the bullpen, Nick Frers pitched effectively by allowing only two hits over two and two-thirds innings while facing just the minimum number of batters.
Richmond built an early lead with a leadoff home run followed by a three-run double over the first three innings. In response, VCU scored in the sixth inning with extra-base hits from Lee and Alec Warden as well as Flores’ two-run homer. However, Richmond extended its advantage with a grand slam later that inning.
VCU matched its season high by turning three double plays defensively during this contest. Michael Petite, Teige Lethert, and Trent Adelman each recorded multiple hits for VCU.
Looking ahead, VCU will try to avoid being swept when it faces Richmond again at Pitt Field on Sunday afternoon. The upcoming game will be streamed live.
