VCU baseball won against Davidson with a score of 7-4 in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on May 20 at Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia.
The game was marked by a weather delay of over an hour, but VCU rallied after play resumed. The Rams scored five runs following the delay and held Davidson scoreless for the final five innings. This win marks VCU’s fourth consecutive victory over Davidson and their tenth win in their last eleven games.
Dawson Newman and Zach Peters pitched out of the bullpen, allowing no runs and just one hit across five innings. Patrick Steitz started for VCU, giving up two earned runs with four strikeouts over four innings before his outing was cut short by lightning delays. Offensively, Dante DeFranco, Michael Petite, Jacob Lee, and Nate Kirkpatrick each collected two hits. Kirkpatrick and Alec Warden combined to drive in VCU’s final four runs.
Davidson took an early lead but VCU responded quickly. Teige Lethert doubled in DeFranco to tie it up after a first-inning run from Davidson. After falling behind 4-2 in the third inning, VCU returned from the rain delay to score in three of the next four innings.
Sean Thompson reached his fiftieth win as head coach of the Rams with this victory—his first at an Atlantic 10 Championship tournament game.
Looking ahead, VCU will face No. 2 Richmond on Thursday afternoon as they aim for a spot in Friday’s semifinals.
