VCU baseball won both games of a doubleheader against Saint Louis on May 1, securing victories of 12-1 and 5-1 at The Diamond in Richmond. The Rams improved their record to 25-20 overall and 14-9 in conference play, while the Billikens fell to 17-29 (8-15).
The Rams’ pitching staff allowed just one run in each game, marking the second time this season they have held opponents to only one hit in multiple games. In the second game, three VCU pitchers combined for a one-hitter. Offensively, VCU scored a total of 17 runs across both games.
Patrick Steitz earned the win in game one, while Elias Holbert was credited with the victory in game two. Nate Kirkpatrick had three hits in the first game and Jacob Lee matched that performance in the second. Quinn Maher hit his fifth home run of the season during game one, which was also VCU’s forty-ninth homer as a team this year.
Michael Petite recorded two multi-hit games during the doubleheader. Dante DeFranco tied his career high with three runs batted in during game one. Cooper Campbell pitched two innings of relief without allowing any runs or hits to close out that contest.
Holbert set a Division I career high by working seven innings and striking out four batters while allowing only an unearned run for VCU in game two. Dawson Newman and Zach Peters finished off that win by each throwing a scoreless inning without giving up any hits.
VCU will conclude its series against Saint Louis at The Diamond on Sunday, May 3 at 10:30 a.m., with streaming available on ESPN+.
