VCU baseball lost to Old Dominion University 7-6 after a ninth-inning rally by the Monarchs at the Ellmer Family Baseball Complex in Norfolk on April 28.
The game was closely contested, with VCU building an early lead but unable to hold off a late surge from Old Dominion. The loss brings VCU’s record to 23-21, while Old Dominion stands at 22-22.
Nick Flores led the Rams offensively with three hits and a stolen base, marking his second three-hit performance in the last three games. Quinn Maher contributed a game-high three runs batted in, including a two-out double that scored two runs in the eighth inning. Michael Petite extended his streak of reaching base to fourteen consecutive games with a first-inning double. On the mound, junior left-hander Bryce Carter pitched one and one-third scoreless innings and allowed only one hit.
VCU started strong by scoring four runs through three innings, including RBI walks drawn by Trent Adelman and Maher and additional runs from double plays. Hunter Gotschall held Old Dominion hitless until the fourth inning. However, Old Dominion tied the game at four with two-run frames in both the fourth and sixth innings. After Maher’s double put VCU ahead again in the eighth, Old Dominion responded with four hits in their final turn at bat for a walk-off win.
Looking ahead, VCU will return home to continue its Atlantic 10 schedule against Saint Louis from May 1 through May 3. All games are scheduled for broadcast on ESPN+.
