VCU baseball defeated Richmond 2-1 in the series finale on Apr. 26 at Pitt Field in Richmond, Virginia. The win brought both teams to a record of 12-9 in Atlantic 10 play, with VCU improving to an overall record of 23-20 and Richmond falling to 25-19.
The victory was significant for VCU as it snapped a six-game losing streak and tied the Rams with the Spiders in the conference standings. Three VCU pitchers combined to limit Richmond to just one run, matching the Rams’ season-low for runs allowed for the fifth time this year.
Dawson Newman earned his fourth win after allowing only one runner to reach safely and stranding two inherited runners. Zach Peters picked up his fifth save in Atlantic 10 competition by pitching four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six batters. At the plate, Dante DeFranco and Alec Warden each hit a double and scored a run, while Michael Petite reached base twice after being hit by pitches.
Trent Adelman drove in what proved to be the winning run with an RBI groundout in the fourth inning following Warden’s leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt from Teige Lethert. The Rams stranded ten Richmond baserunners throughout the game but struck out only three times themselves while their pitchers tallied nine strikeouts.
Looking ahead, VCU will continue its road trip with a game against Old Dominion on Tuesday, April 28, aiming to split their season series before returning home for a weekend set against Saint Louis from May 1 through May 3. All upcoming games are scheduled for broadcast on ESPN+.
