Highway work is scheduled across the Lynchburg District for the week of March 9-15, with several road, lane, and structure closures planned. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) notes that weather or other issues may cause delays or cancellations to these activities. Up-to-date information can be accessed by calling 511 or visiting https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.

District-wide, crews will handle tasks such as bridge and guardrail maintenance, vegetation management, pothole and surface repairs, paving operations, mowing, drainage work, and roadside cleanup.

In Amherst County, Route 648 (Beck Creek Road) remains closed for culvert replacement with a detour in place until May 2026. Route 1202 (Lynchburg Avenue over Branch Harris Creek) is also closed due to bridge deterioration; traffic is rerouted via Brooks Street, Harrison Avenue, Francis Avenue, and Route 29 Business. There is currently no expected completion date for this project.

Appomattox County’s Route 460 Appomattox Bypass (Richmond Highway) is undergoing reconstruction. Starting the week of March 9th—weather permitting—westbound traffic will be reduced to one lane with a speed limit lowered to 45 mph. Completion is estimated for December 2026.

Buckingham County’s Route 601 (Pattie Road) is closed due to a bridge replacement project. A detour has been established and work should finish by June 2026.

On Campbell County’s Route 29 (Wards Road), an intersection improvement project has led to closure of passing lanes in both directions from Route 699 (Gladys Road) to just north of Route 699. This project is expected to conclude by September 2026.

Charlotte County’s Route 642 (Mossing Ford Road) bridge over Roanoke Creek remains closed for replacement; a detour directs traffic during construction through December 2026.

Nelson County drivers on northbound Route 29 (Thomas Nelson Highway) over Rockfish River face single-lane traffic and a reduced speed limit of 50 mph while bridge repairs continue through May 2026.

In Pittsylvania County, the bridge on Route 817 (Mountain Drive) over Turkeycock Creek is temporarily closed with a detour in place until December 2026. On Route 311 (Harville-Saunders Parkway), road widening will result in temporary lane closures managed by flagging operations until November 2027.

No specific projects were listed for Cumberland County, Halifax County, Lynchburg city limits or Prince Edward County beyond district-wide activities.

The Virginia Department of Transportation manages these projects as part of its mission to build, maintain and operate Virginia’s roads, bridges and tunnels for safe and efficient travel (official website). VDOT oversees one of the nation’s largest state highway systems spanning tens of thousands of lane-miles (official website), provides services including highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 (official website), and operates from its headquarters at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond. The agency evolved from the early State Highway Commission formed in 1906 (official website) into today’s organization responsible for planning, constructing and maintaining transportation infrastructure across the Commonwealth (official website).
