U.S. Representative Jennifer A. Kiggans said on April 27 that she expects management to address deficiencies identified in a federal audit of the Suffolk Main Post Office, following concerns raised by constituents about mail delivery and facility conditions.

The issue is significant for residents and employees in Virginia’s Second Congressional District, as the audit found problems affecting both timely mail delivery and workplace safety. According to a press release and X post from Kiggans, her statement was issued in response to an interim report by the United States Postal Service (USPS) Office of Inspector General (OIG), which examined delivery operations and property conditions at the Suffolk Main Post Office after an on-site inspection in February. The statement also announced her letter to the Virginia District Manager highlighting these findings as reported on her congressional website.

Kiggans said, “I have continued to hear complaints from constituents regarding the performance of the Suffolk Post Office and the most recent results contained within the USPS OIG interim report related to the delivery operations and property conditions is deeply concerning. This report underscores that these issues are not only impacting the timely delivery of letters and packages across my district, but that facility conditions are also raising serious safety concerns for USPS employees. I expect management to address these deficiencies and I look forward to reviewing the final report from USPS OIG. I’m hoping that my letter to District Manager Impronto conveys the seriousness of these issues and helps ensure they are addressed without delay.” According to <a href="https://www.uspsoig.gov/sites/default/files/reports/2026-04/26-044-3-r26.pdf”>the USPS OIG audit, 26,430 delayed mail pieces were identified during inspection but were improperly reported to management; this included thousands of letters, flats, and packages found at various locations within the facility. The audit also flagged scanning practices with data entered far from intended delivery points—one package was scanned nearly four miles away—and noted safety issues such as un-inspected fire extinguishers, blocked electrical panels, and chained doors.

The same audit found that employee availability at Suffolk was 87.55 percent early in the review period, below the Postal Service goal of 93.95 percent for that fiscal year. Metrics such as Customer 360 inquiries and failures against district averages were also examined as part of ongoing efforts by USPS to improve reliability nationwide according to the report.

Kiggans has served in Congress representing Virginia’s Second District since 2023 after previously serving in the Virginia Senate from 2020 through 2022 according to her official biography. She is a former Navy helicopter pilot who later worked as a board-certified adult-geriatric primary care nurse practitioner before entering politics.
