U.S. Rep. Jennifer A. Kiggans said on May 5 that continued economic support for small businesses is essential for job creation and growth in Virginia’s Second Congressional District under Republican-backed tax policies.

The district includes Virginia Beach and communities on the Eastern Shore, where small businesses are a major source of employment, according to Kiggans’ official biography.

Kiggans made her statement in a post on X, recognizing the contributions of small businesses during Small Business Week. The message was accompanied by a graphic outlining House Republican tax relief initiatives and was directed toward constituents in Virginia’s Second Congressional District.

“Small Businesses create jobs and drive our economy here in VA02. By making the small business deduction permanent, restoring full immediate expensing, and cutting red tape, we’re giving Main Street the tools it needs to grow,” Kiggans said.

Nationally, small businesses make up 99.9% of all businesses in the United States and employ 62.3 million people. They account for 45.9% of the private sector workforce and have generated 61% of net new jobs since 1995, according to data from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Kiggans has represented Virginia’s 2nd District since 2023, according to her official biography. She previously served as a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and as a nurse practitioner in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. Kiggans also served in the Virginia State Senate from 2020 to 2022.
