The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia will participate in National Night Out events across nearly a dozen communities on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The office plans to join with law enforcement partners and local residents throughout the region.

United States Attorney C. Todd Gilbert said, “The Western District of Virginia is one of the most geographically diverse districts in the country, spanning from the Northern Shenandoah Valley all the way down to the North Carolina border and we will have AUSAs and staff at events throughout the entire region. National Night Out is an opportunity for folks in our community who might not know what the U.S. Attorney’s Office is, what we do, or the services we provide to meet us one-on-one. It’s a wonderful night where communities come together and reminds us, we have much more in common than we think.”

Assistant United States Attorneys and professional staff are scheduled to attend events in Abingdon, Bristol, Chilhowie, Albemarle County, Louisa, Pulaski, Woodstock, Vinton, Roanoke, and other locations.

U.S. Attorney Gilbert added, “Local law enforcement plays a crucial role in Department of Justice priorities, like Operation Take Back America, and we are proud to meet our partners in their communities to increase partnerships and trust during National Night Out. These bonds strengthen relationships which makes our entire district safer.”

National Night Out is an annual campaign that aims to build relationships between law enforcement agencies and communities nationwide by encouraging participation in neighborhood activities such as block parties and safety demonstrations. The event takes place on the first Tuesday of August each year across thousands of communities.

Established in 1984 with support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance at the U.S. Department of Justice and administered by the National Association of Town Watch—a nonprofit organization—National Night Out brings police officers and neighbors together through various community activities under positive circumstances.
