The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on May 14 that U.S. 58 eastbound lanes between the Route 713 (Ogburn Road) overpass and Meadow Lane, as well as the Ogburn Road overpass structure, remain closed in Brunswick County following a tractor trailer crash on May 13.

The closure is necessary while crews work to repair asphalt on U.S. 58 eastbound and assess damage to the Ogburn Road overpass. The department said it aims to reopen one lane of U.S. 58 by Saturday, May 16, if weather permits. In the meantime, motorists are required to follow traffic channeling devices and posted detours that direct vehicles onto Route 46 (Christanna Highway), through Business 58 in Lawrenceville, and back onto U.S. 58 via Route 750 (Lawrenceville Plank Road). VDOT crews will be stationed along the detour route to assist commercial truck drivers with wide turns.

The Ogburn Road overpass will stay closed until further notice while inspections and repairs continue. Drivers are instructed to obey road closure signs and use alternate routes: southbound travelers should take Sixth Avenue to Business 58/Route 46 (South Hicks Street/Christanna Highway) then Route 715 (Iron Bridge Road) back to Ogburn Road; northbound travelers should reverse this route.

Updated traffic information is available through VDOT’s free mobile app, online at 511Virginia, or by calling “511” from any phone within Virginia.

According to the official website, the Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the largest state highway systems in the country, overseeing planning, construction, maintenance of roads, bridges and tunnels across tens of thousands of lane-miles statewide.
