U.S. 33 in Orange County will close to all traffic at the railroad bridge between Route 20 north and Route 20 south, starting at 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. This closure is part of the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) initiative to construct a new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 33 and Route 20. The purpose of the closure is to allow crews to install a pipe under the roadway at the bridge, which is necessary due to tight working constraints and rocky conditions beneath the bridge.
Message boards are currently informing drivers about the detour during the construction period. Eastbound U.S. 33 drivers intending to go east on U.S. 33 or south on Route 20 should take a slight right on Governor Barbour Street ahead of the closure and follow it to Route 20 south. Meanwhile, westbound U.S. 33 drivers planning to travel west on U.S. 33 or north on Route 20 should turn south on Route 20 ahead of the closure, continue west on Governor Barbour Street, then east on U.S. 33, and finally north on Route 20.
The work is anticipated to be finished, and U.S. 33 is expected to be reopened by 5 a.m. on Monday, May 5.
