The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 17 that both directions of U.S. 29/250 at Route 601 (Old Ivy Road), as well as the Old Ivy Road bridge, will be closed overnight this weekend for a bridge rehabilitation project.
The closure is scheduled from midnight to 7 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, and again from midnight to 6 a.m. on Sunday, April 19. Message boards have been set up to alert drivers about the planned closures.
During these times, truck traffic heading north will be detoured via Interstate 64 east to Exit 124 before continuing west on U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) and then taking the ramp for U.S. 29 north (Emmet Street/Seminole Trail). Passenger vehicles and local traffic traveling north should use U.S. 250 Business (Ivy Road) and Emmet Street instead. To access points south of the closure, drivers are advised to use the U.S. 29/250 west exit at Route 601, turn left onto eastbound U.S. 250 Business, then immediately right onto U.S. 29/250.
The project involves replacing the current bridge with a new deck and beams while rehabilitating its piers; construction is expected to finish by July of next year if weather permits.
