Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced on June 1 the addition of Ty Walz as assistant coach, completing the Hokies’ coaching staff ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
Walz returns to his alma mater after spending three years in Providence, Rhode Island. During his tenure there, he played a key role in recruiting and developing Andrew Reall and Alex Semeneko. Both athletes were unranked recruits out of high school; under Walz’s guidance, Reall won an individual Ivy League Conference title, reached the NCAA Championship Round of 12 in 2026, and tied a program-best season record with 37 wins and six losses. Semeneko advanced to an Ivy League finals appearance, earned an NCAA Championship berth, and twice finished among the top ten for pinfalls across the NCAA.
Before working in Providence, Walz spent three seasons on staff at Virginia Tech. He contributed to Jared Haught’s run to an NCAA finals appearance—making Haught just the second finalist in program history—and was involved in Zack Zavatsky’s development into a two-time All-American and three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion for Virginia Tech.
As a competitor for Virginia Tech, Walz became the only three-time heavyweight All-American in Hokies history and claimed an individual ACC title. He was part of the team that achieved a fourth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships—the only trophy team in program history—and was also Hokies Wrestling’s first world medalist by earning bronze at the 2018 Under-23 World Championships.
Walz returns to Blacksburg with his wife, Deej, and their two daughters.
