The southbound lanes of I-495 from Georgetown Pike to between Old Dominion Drive and Lewinsville Road will be shifted onto newly constructed lanes on the Beltway’s outer section. This change, initially planned for an earlier date, is now set for Wednesday night, July 23. All southbound lanes in this section are expected to reopen in their new alignment by 6 a.m. on Thursday, July 24.
Overnight work will take place on Tuesday, July 22, to complete necessary roadway paving for the traffic shift. A triple lane closure will occur with one lane open on southbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and Dulles Toll Road from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning.
On Wednesday night, a similar triple lane closure will be implemented from near the American Legion Bridge to Lewinsville Road from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m., with intermittent total stoppages occurring between midnight and 5 a.m.
Additionally, several ramps will be closed and detoured during this time: the ramp from northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495; the ramp from Georgetown Pike to southbound I-495; and the ramp from southbound I-495 to Georgetown Pike (Exit 44).
Motorists traveling on these routes should follow designated detours. Those traveling on northbound GWMP to southbound I-495 will exit at Georgetown Pike before following additional detour instructions. Similarly, drivers heading from Georgetown Pike or southbound I-495 towards specific exits must adhere to specified alternative routes.
Drivers are advised to exercise caution as they adjust to new traffic patterns due to ongoing construction in this area of I-495. The realignment of these lanes is part of the broader 495 NEXT project aimed at extending the Express Lanes by an additional 2.5 miles northward by year-end, with final completion anticipated by mid-2026.
Weather conditions may affect scheduled work times.
