Beginning in early January, a long-term traffic shift will be implemented on Route 11 (Williamson Road) in Roanoke County due to a sidewalk construction project. Weather permitting, the southbound lane of Williamson Road between Greenway Drive (Route 1821) and Plymouth Drive (Route 836) will be closed. During this period, drivers traveling south will use the center turn lane.
A portion of Plymouth Drive, about 200 feet near its intersection with Williamson Road, is also scheduled to close for approximately two weeks in the spring. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes during this time.
Electronic message boards and signage will be installed to notify drivers about the changes in traffic patterns. The boards will display updated information regarding the schedule.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which manages this project, is responsible for planning, building, and maintaining transportation infrastructure across Virginia. VDOT oversees one of the largest state-maintained highway systems in the country and provides services such as traffic management and public road condition updates through resources like its official website. The agency’s duties include highway maintenance, land-use permit oversight along state routes, and operating systems like Virginia 511 for real-time traffic information.
VDOT’s headquarters are located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond. The department originated from the State Highway Commission established in 1906 and has evolved to support Virginia’s growing transportation needs.
