Motorists traveling on westbound Route 33 in Harrisonburg should prepare for travel-lane shifts scheduled for Monday, June 16, 2025. The lane adjustments will occur near the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange.

The traffic shift will start just west of the new Route 33 bridge over Interstate 81 and extend to Carlton Street. Drivers heading westbound on Route 33 will transition onto a newly constructed roadway and a new section of the Norfolk Southern Railway bridge. After crossing this bridge, vehicles will return to the original alignment at the Carlton Street intersection. These changes are planned to take place during daylight hours on June 16.

This development is part of ongoing construction efforts on Route 33 at the Interstate 81 exit 247 interchange in Harrisonburg. All work is contingent upon weather conditions, and schedules may change accordingly. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will provide updates as necessary.

VDOT contractors are currently replacing two Route 33 bridges over I-81 at exit 247, along with two railway bridges located just west of the interchange. This project also includes several enhancements to the exit 247 interchange. A work-zone speed limit of 25 miles per hour is enforced on Route 33 throughout the project’s duration, which is expected to conclude by summer 2026.

In July 2022, Triton Construction Inc., based in St. Albans, West Virginia, was awarded a $43.3 million contract for this project.
