Tomorrow night, Friday, May 9, traffic on northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) in the Tysons-McLean area will be shifted onto approximately two miles of newly constructed lanes on the outer section of the highway. This traffic shift and related lane closures will commence Friday night, with all four northbound Beltway lanes reopening in their new alignment by 10 a.m. Saturday morning, May 10. In case of inclement weather or other work delays, Saturday night will serve as a backup date.

The southbound I-495 (Outer Loop) lanes are expected to be shifted in late May or early June. These shifts are crucial for crews to access the center portion of the Beltway to construct the new 495 Express Lanes.

During the northbound I-495 traffic shift from May 9 to May 10, all four general-purpose lanes from just south of Old Dominion Drive to the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) will be shifted onto new lanes built on the outer side of the highway. The implementation involves a single mobile lane closure starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, followed by two additional lane closures at 9 p.m., between Lewinsville Road and GWMP.

One lane will remain open except during intermittent total traffic stoppages and slow-roll operations occurring between midnight and 5 a.m., with police assistance for directing motorists. Lanes will begin reopening at 7 a.m. on Saturday, with all four northbound lanes open and realigned by 10 a.m.

Additionally, the on-ramp from westbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) to northbound I-495 will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday. Affected drivers are advised to detour via southbound Route 123 (Exit 19A) to access northbound I-495 toward Rockville/Baltimore.

Motorists are urged to slow down, eliminate distractions, and drive cautiously as they adjust to the newly aligned Beltway lanes while construction continues in this part of I-495. Travelers should anticipate narrowed lanes and shoulders, traffic pattern adjustments, and lane closures during non-peak times.

All work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary. Drivers should exercise caution and expect potential delays when traveling through this area.
