Part of Route 253 in Rockingham County will experience traffic restrictions starting March 3 due to maintenance work on the North River bridge. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that a temporary traffic signal and vehicle-width restrictions will be in place for approximately three months at the village of Port Republic.

Vehicles exceeding 11 feet in width will not be able to cross the bridge during this period and must find alternate routes. Signage on Route 253, Route 276, Route 340, and Route 825 will inform motorists about the width restriction.

For vehicles under 11 feet in width, a temporary traffic signal on Route 253 will manage traffic as they approach the North River bridge. This signal will operate continuously until maintenance concludes around May 23, weather permitting.

Motorists can access updated traffic alerts by dialing 511 or visiting VDOT’s website. The VDOT Customer Service Center is available for road hazard reports and transportation inquiries at 800-FOR-ROAD or through their mobile-friendly site. Agents are accessible around the clock.

VDOT’s Staunton District serves several counties including Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath. Updates can also be followed on VDOT’s social media accounts.
