Construction of a new pedestrian bridge over U.S. 29 in Albemarle County is nearing its final stages, with significant developments scheduled for next week. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced that their contractor will be placing beams to support the walkway over this busy roadway.

To ensure safety during the process, drivers on U.S. 29 between Seminole Court and Zan Road should prepare for intermittent traffic stoppages lasting up to 20 minutes in both directions. These delays are planned nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., starting Tuesday, May 20, through Thursday, May 22.

The construction team will lift and secure bridge beams weighing between 68,000 and 78,000 pounds onto the new supports. Traffic will resume once each beam is securely positioned. Drivers are advised to adhere to directional signs, reduce speed, and exercise caution near the work zone.

This pedestrian bridge represents the final phase of a design-build project aimed at enhancing safety and reducing congestion on U.S. 29 and Route 743 (Hydraulic Road) in Albemarle County and Charlottesville City.

Previously completed elements of this project include:

– A roundabout at Hydraulic Road and Hillsdale Drive
– Access management improvements at intersections along Hydraulic Road
– A signalized pedestrian crossing with reconfigured traffic movements at the intersection of Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29

The pedestrian bridge is projected to open by October, contingent on weather conditions.

Further details about this initiative can be found on VDOT’s website under Hydraulic Road and U.S. 29 transportation improvements.
