The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of traffic alerts for the Hampton Roads District from May 25 to May 31, 2025. The agency will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and major roads in Virginia for holiday travel from noon on Friday, May 23, until noon on Tuesday, May 27.
However, several scheduled closures are expected to occur. These closures are subject to change based on weather conditions and other factors.
For detailed information about lane closures necessary for maintenance and construction throughout Hampton Roads, VDOT advises visiting their website or using the VDOT 511 smartphone app.
Specific bridge and tunnel closures include single-lane closures at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 southbound on May 27 and northbound on May 28-29. Additionally, there will be alternating mobile single-lane closures southbound on May 29.
For updates related to the Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels), HRBT Expansion Project, and other major projects like the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening in James City County, travelers are encouraged to check respective project websites.
Several long-term temporary traffic shifts have been implemented across different segments of I-64 as part of ongoing projects such as the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Hampton Projects and Norfolk Reversible Express Lanes. Notable changes include alternating double-lane closures between Granby Street and Chesapeake Boulevard from May 27-29 and full ramp closures affecting various routes during specified nighttime hours.
Other significant closures involve full off-ramp shutdowns from I-264 east to Lynnhaven Parkway in Virginia Beach during late-night hours from May 27-29. On Route 17 in Chesapeake, full on-ramp closures northbound to I-464 north are scheduled from May 27-31.
Travelers should plan accordingly by consulting VDOT’s resources for real-time updates regarding these traffic modifications.
