The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of road closures and lane restrictions in the Hampton Roads District for the week of June 29 to July 5, 2025. These measures are part of ongoing maintenance and construction efforts across various highways, bridges, and tunnels in the region.
VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift most lane closures on interstates and other major roads in Virginia from noon on Thursday, July 3 until noon on Monday, July 7 to accommodate holiday travel. However, scheduled closures may change due to weather conditions or other factors.
Key areas affected include the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel on I-664 with alternating single-lane closures northbound on July 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and southbound from June 30 to July 1 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
For those traveling through Elizabeth River Tunnels (Downtown/Midtown Tunnels), updates can be found by visiting their respective maintenance schedules online.
Significant work is also planned for I-64 across multiple locations:
– In Chesapeake, full ramp closures from I-64 west to I-464 north (exit 291A) will occur from June 30 to July 1 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
– In Virginia Beach, full on-ramp closures from Indian River Road to I-64 east are scheduled from June 29 to July 2 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.
In James City County, as part of the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening project, there will be single-lane closures both eastbound and westbound at various times between June 30 and July 2.
For detailed information about lane closures related to the HRBT Expansion Project or Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL), travelers are encouraged to visit relevant project websites for updates.
Additional significant disruptions include:
– Full closure of I-64 west between Settlers Landing Road/Woodland Road (exit 276) and North Armistead Avenue (exit 265B) on July 1 from midnight until early morning hours.
– Multiple lane closures along I-64 east and west in Newport News/Hampton areas affecting exits such as Denbigh Boulevard (exit 258) and Jefferson Avenue (exit 255).
Travelers should plan accordingly by checking VDOT’s resources including their website at vdot.virginia.gov or by using the VDOT smartphone app for real-time traffic updates.
