Gary Martin, Jeremiah Nubbe, and Charlotta Sandkulla from the Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams were named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Athletes of the Week after their performances at the Penn Relays, according to an April 28 announcement by the conference.

The recognition highlights recent achievements for Virginia’s program. Martin contributed to both the distance medley relay (DMR) and 4xMile teams. He anchored the DMR to a third-place finish with a time of 9:33.13 in the College Men’s 4xMile Championship of America, while also running a notable split of 3:54.94 in another relay event. This season, Martin is ranked third in the ACC for the 5000 meters with a time of 13:25.42 and seventh in the ACC for the 1500 meters at 3:39.92; his national ranking for the longer distance is sixteenth.

In field events, Sandkulla won her event at Penn Relays by throwing a distance of 67.13 meters in her penultimate attempt during the College Women’s Hammer Throw Championship—seven meters ahead of second place—and currently holds Virginia’s school record from an earlier meet this season. Teammate Aixa Corbacho finished fourth with a mark just under sixty meters.

Nubbe claimed victory in his event as well, winning by six meters with a personal best throw of 73.76 meters during his third attempt at Penn Relays’ College Men’s Hammer Throw Championship; he now leads all competitors in this event within both Virginia history (second all-time) and across current ACC rankings while sitting sixth nationally this year.

This marks multiple weekly awards this season for both Nubbe and Sandkulla, joining other Cavaliers such as Will Daley, Kendric Curry, and Liam Paneque who have received similar honors throughout spring competition.

Looking ahead, Virginia athletes are scheduled to compete next at several meets including Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational on May 1-2 as well as upcoming twilight competitions in Lynchburg and Durham.
