VMI Baseball lost to Mercer on May 9 in the second game of their series at OrthoGeorgia Park. Despite an improved offensive showing late in the game, VMI fell by a score of 5-2, allowing Mercer to secure the series win.

The outcome is significant as it marks another setback for VMI (27-22, 3-14 SoCon) during conference play, while Mercer (38-13, 11-6 SoCon) strengthened its position with the victory.

VMI recorded nine hits compared to Mercer’s eight. Seth Buchanan and Owen Prince accounted for six of those hits for VMI, with Buchanan hitting a home run. Cole Raile contributed two base hits. Bradley Garner hit a double and scored once. On the mound, Eli Tyndall pitched four innings in relief while Hunter Sipe threw 1.2 no-hit innings with two strikeouts and no earned runs.

Mercer built an early lead by scoring twice in the second inning and adding single runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings—the last coming on a solo home run. VMI responded when Buchanan homered over the left field wall in the sixth inning. In the ninth inning, after Garner’s leadoff double, he scored on a double-play ball to bring VMI’s total to two runs.

The Keydets will conclude their road schedule with one more game against Mercer on Sunday at 1 p.m.
