Contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will install a temporary, long-term stop sign on the on-ramp from Frederick Boulevard (Route 17) south to I-264 west in Portsmouth. The installation is scheduled to begin as early as overnight on February 27. This measure is part of ongoing work for noise wall construction activities along I-264.
Once the stop sign is in place, drivers using this ramp must come to a complete stop before merging onto I-264 west when it is safe.
Motorists should also expect minor lane shifts at several ramps over the coming weeks. These include the off-ramp from I-264 west to Route 164/MLK Expressway west (exit 6), the on-ramp from Route 164/MLK Expressway east to I-264 east, and the on-ramp from Frederick Boulevard south to I-264 west.
Additionally, shoulder closures will be implemented along both directions of I-264 between Portsmouth Boulevard (exit 4) and Effingham Street (exit 7).
These traffic changes are expected to remain in effect through late 2027. All work depends on weather and scheduling and may change accordingly.
