VCU baseball defeated Davidson 12-9 on May 16, with catcher Teige Lethert hitting a three-run walk-off home run in the team’s final game at The Diamond. Lethert, one of seven seniors honored before the game, secured a weekend sweep for the Rams.
The win marked VCU’s program record 20th conference victory this season. The team struck out 15 batters during the game and reached a total of 41 strikeouts over the weekend series, their highest in a series since April 2016. With three home runs in this game, VCU has now hit 62 homers this season—just four shy of its all-time record.
Alec Warden led the offense by going three-for-three with a home run and three runs batted in. Both Lethert and Nick Flores contributed two hits each, including one home run apiece. On the mound, Dawson Newman started for VCU and pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Hunter Gotschall finished the final innings to earn his third win as a Ram, allowing only one unearned run while striking out six.
The Rams built an early lead but saw Davidson tie it at nine runs apiece in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning, after Alec Warden singled and Tyler Petite walked with two outs, Lethert delivered his decisive homer to secure victory for VCU.
Looking ahead, VCU will enter the Atlantic 10 Championship as the No. 3 seed and face No. 6 Davidson again on Wednesday, May 20 at Capital One Park in Tysons.
