The Surry County Board of Supervisors will hold a special called meeting on April 29 at 6:00 p.m. in the General District Courtroom of the Surry County Government Center at 45 School St., Surry, Virginia. The agenda includes a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 Budget.

This meeting is significant for residents as it offers an opportunity to learn about and comment on how county funds may be allocated for the coming year, particularly in areas such as education.

Education remains a key area for budget consideration. The Surry County Public Schools District, which is the only school district in the county, enrolled 694 students during the 2023-24 school year, according to the Virginia Department of Education. Of these students, Surry Elementary School had the highest enrollment among all three schools in the county with 283 students during that period according to state data.

Demographic data show that Black and white students each made up 43.4% of total enrollment during this time, with both groups totaling 301 students respectively as reported by official figures. Total student enrollment increased by about 1.3% compared to the previous year’s total of 685 according to state records.

Among grade levels, sixth grade had the largest number of students enrolled with 59 (8.5% of total), while pre-kindergarten had just 34 students (4.9%) according to education statistics.

The upcoming public hearing provides community members with an opportunity to share their views before final decisions are made regarding next year’s fiscal plans.
