Virginia attackman Truitt Sunderland scored a career-high 10 points to lead the No. 12 Cavaliers to a 17-6 victory over Drexel on April 24, closing out the regular season at Klöckner Stadium. The win followed Virginia’s Senior Day ceremony, which honored Sunderland and ten other graduating players.
The game held added significance as it could be Sunderland’s final appearance at home after four years with the team. His six assists were also a personal best, making him only the second Cavalier this season to record double-digit points in a single game. Joey Terenzi and Ryan Duenkel each recorded hat tricks, while Jake Marek made twelve saves after entering in the second period.
The Cavaliers finished their regular season with an overall record of eight wins and six losses. The result extended Virginia’s winning streak against Drexel to thirteen games and improved their all-time series record to nineteen wins and one loss against the Dragons.
Friday’s contest was dedicated to the University of Virginia Gordie Center, whose mission is “to end hazing and substance misuse among college and high school students nationwide.” During Senior Day ceremonies before faceoff, eleven fourth-year or graduate student-athletes were recognized for their contributions.
With postseason play approaching, Virginia now awaits results from other Atlantic Coast Conference matchups that will determine seeding for next week’s ACC Tournament. The tournament will take place May 1 and May 3 at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina; both semifinals and championship games are scheduled for broadcast on ACC Network.
