Student advocates from Falls Church and McLean high schools spoke about their experiences in environmental science and solar advocacy with Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid in an Earth Day episode of Our Voices, Our Future, according to an April 27 statement.
The discussion focused on how students are engaging with renewable energy topics both inside and outside the classroom. Leem, a student who moved to the United States from the Maldives, described concerns about sea-level rise affecting her home country. Nadia talked about how rising temperatures and pollution impact her ability to spend time outdoors. Both students encouraged others not to hesitate in voicing their concerns, emphasizing that one voice can make a significant difference.
The students participate in Get2Green clubs at their schools, where they have presented information to the School Board and local Parent Teacher Associations. These efforts aim to connect what they learn in science classes with broader community action.
Dr. Michelle Reid said, “One of the things that is really uniquely Fairfax is the importance we place on student voice and the agency that comes from learning to advocate — and not just advocate loud, but advocate strategically.”
The episode also highlighted opportunities for students to learn more about solar power and other forms of renewable energy within Fairfax County Public Schools.
