Beginning March 27, the Virginia Department of Transportation will implement overnight closures on ramps connecting southbound I-495 with Georgetown Pike and George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) in McLean. These closures will occur weeknights through April 17 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., as part of the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension project.
The exit ramp from southbound I-495 to Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) and the on-ramp from northwest GWMP to southbound I-495 will be closed during these hours. Crews are installing beams for new express lanes ramp connections at GWMP.
Motorists traveling on northwest GWMP to southbound I-495 should take the exit to northbound I-495 toward Maryland, continue north to Exit 41 for Clara Barton Parkway, stay left for westbound Clara Barton Parkway, take the exit to Carderock, turn left at the stop sign followed by another left turn onto eastbound Clara Barton Parkway, and merge onto southbound I-495 toward Virginia.
For those traveling on southbound I-495 collector road to Georgetown Pike (Exit 44), they should continue south on I-495 general purpose lanes to Exit 46B for Route 123 North, then take the exit for northbound I-495 general purpose lanes and proceed north to Exit 44 for Georgetown Pike.
Additionally, from March 31 at 10 p.m. until April 1 at 5 a.m., the ramp from southbound I-495 to southeast GWMP (Exit 43) will be closed for a traffic shift. Motorists will be detoured via Route 123 North and back onto northbound I-495 towards GWMP.
The schedule may change due to weather or other delays. Drivers are advised to exercise caution and anticipate potential delays in this area.
