The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the closure of Route 601, also known as Bush Mill Road, in Northumberland County. The road will be closed starting Wednesday, February 12, to facilitate repair work on a box culvert. This section of Bush Mill Road is situated between Route 604 (Hazard Drive) and Route 611 (Gilliams Road) in the Heathsville area.
This repair is part of a larger $3.1 million maintenance project aimed at addressing scour in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula regions. Scour refers to the erosion of soil around the foundation of structures such as box culverts and bridges.
A detour route has been posted for drivers affected by this closure. The detour spans nearly seven miles, with signs directing traffic along Route 604 (Hazard Drive), Route 201 (Courthouse Road), and Route 611 (Gilliams Road). VDOT encourages drivers to select alternate routes that best suit their travel needs.
To alert travelers about the impending closure, message boards will be installed on January 29. Weather permitting, VDOT expects Bush Mill Road to reopen by early June.
VDOT's most recent traffic count indicates that approximately 300 vehicles use Bush Mill Road daily.
