NFIB State Director Julia Hammond is urging Virginia lawmakers to consider the potential impact of proposed legislation on small businesses as the 2025 regular session of the General Assembly begins on January 8.
"Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, creating jobs and driving growth in our communities," Hammond stated. "It’s critical that the General Assembly evaluates how proposed legislation may affect Main Street."
According to the latest NFIB Small Business Optimism Index, business owners are increasingly optimistic about economic trends. However, they still face challenges such as rising costs and a shortage of qualified job candidates, Hammond noted.
"Our members are urging their legislators to remember the challenges small business owners face and to pass legislation that helps them grow and create jobs," she said. This includes adopting a budget that does not increase taxes and fees on small businesses for expanded programs and seeking input from employers on workforce preparation strategies.
Hammond emphasized, "Our members stand ready to work with legislative leaders and Gov. Glenn Youngkin to find solutions that enable entrepreneurs to own, operate, and grow their businesses."
