FOIA Request to Virginia Department of Elections Regarding Detailed Information on Absentee Ballots for the November 5, 2024 General Election was sent on September 25, 2024.
As a part of our ongoing commitment to provide comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Old Dominion News have formally requested records under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act. Our request specifically targets detailed information regarding absentee ballots, early voting, overseas voting, military voting, and other forms of mailed ballots that were sent out to voters for the upcoming general election.
The specific fields we have requested include Voter ID, Registration Date, DoB/Age, Full Name (including First Name, Middle Name, Last Name and any suffix), Registration Status and Reason, County and Precinct details along with Address (City and State included), Phone number and Email Address. We have also asked for Party Affiliation details along with Absentee Status.
Additionally, we are seeking information about each ballot including its ID, the date it was sent out for the election, its request type (whether it's an absentee ballot or mail-in etc.), the date it was requested and sent out as well as its return date. We are also interested in knowing its status whether it has been accepted or rejected.
As a media organization dedicated to holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public through our reporting efforts, we believe access to these public records is essential. We are hopeful that our request will be granted without fees due to our role as a media professional.
We look forward to sharing this information with our readers once received from the Virginia Department of Elections.
