Census Bureau: More women than men in Virginia in 2021

Of the 8,582,479 people living in Virginia in 2021, 50.5% (4,337,198) were women and 49.5% (4,245,281) were men, according to U.S. Census Bureau data obtained by Old Dominion News.

Data showed the average age for women in Virginia in 2021 was on par with the national average of 40 for women. Meanwhile, Virginia's male population stands at an average age of 37 years, placing them lower than the US average of 38.

According to census data, women aged 18 and over outnumbered men in the same age group by 339, totaling 2,680,733 individuals. Meanwhile, in the 65 and over group, there were 594,392 men and 734,208 women.

Data for this story was compiled from the bureau's American Community Survey. Information from the survey helps to determine how federal and state funds are distributed.
