4.5% of citizens in Virginia unemployed in 2021

Virginia's unemployment rate hit 4.5% among residents aged 16 and 65 years old in 2021. That's 202,807 people out of the 8,582,479 living in Virginia at the time, according to data U.S. Census Bureau data obtained on Oct. 26, 2023.

The unemployment rate in Virginia has remained fairly stable compared to the 4.5% registered in 2020.

The percentage of people unemployed in Virginia was less than the national unemployment rate of 5.5%.

Of the 4,349,828 people who had a job during that time, 130,047 were employed in the Armed Forces and 4,219,781 belonged to the civilian labor force.
