James Durham – Born into slavery in Philadelphia in 1762, Durham is recognized as the first Black physician in the United States.
Rebecca Lee Crumpler - After years of working as a nurse, Crumpler became the first Black woman in the United States to receive a medical degree in 1864.
Nathan Francis Mossell - Dr. Mossell was a surgeon and civil rights activist who helped rally African Americans in 1895 to establish the Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital and Training School, one of the first hospitals in the U.S. where Black doctors treated Black patients.
