Expansion of Neurology Services in Franklin County Addresses Community Need
Carilion Clinic Neurology – Franklin opened on Sept. 1, marking the first neurology clinic in the area. The new practice, located at 1171 Franklin St. in Rocky Mount, offers new, convenient access to specialized care for Franklin County residents and beyond.
“We’re privileged to serve these communities,” said Feryal Nauman, M.D., neurologist at the practice. “It’s not unusual for us to see patients from Martinsville, Henry County, Floyd, Smith Mountain Lake, and even North Carolina. It’s been encouraging to care for patients who can now receive care closer to home.”
Treatment of several conditions will be available, including:
- Seizures
- Stroke
- Dementia
- Neuropathy
- Myasthenia Gravis, a disease of the skeletal muscles
- Tremors
- Parkinson’s disease
- Headaches
“Our goal is to build on this clinic and Dr. Nauman’s services,” said Carl Cline, vice president and administrator of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital. “This includes considerations for a future neurology office closer to Franklin Memorial Hospital, which would allow neurology patients more seamless access to our equipment and technology for advanced care offerings. We were excited to open this first practice as the initial step in that journey.”
The practice also addresses the greater challenge of healthcare access. Carilion’s recent Health Assessment for Franklin County reported that two of the top health needs identified by community members were access and transportation.
“This practice brings expert neurology care close to home for our community, helping remove barriers to care,” said Cline.
The development is just one of several Carilion Clinic projects in Franklin County. Recently, Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital completed the first phase of operating room renovations and expansions. Additional specialty services include OBGYN, hand surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry and more.
For many local residents, the new practice provides a stepping stone toward healing.
“Neurological illnesses can be life-altering,” said Dr. Nauman. “When patients get the proper diagnosis and treatment, they feel validated and understood. We’re here to help, and we want to make sure everyone has access to these services.”
Franklin Neurology is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Patients are accepted by referral only. To learn more, talk with your primary care provider or visit CarilionClinic.org.
