A project aimed at enhancing safety and improving road conditions on Stefaniga Road in Stafford County is set to commence this week. The initiative will focus on both safety measures and resurfacing efforts to minimize the risk of accidents and provide a smoother driving experience.
The project involves widening the existing gravel shoulders along nearly four miles of Stefaniga Road, stretching between Poplar Road and Mountain View Road. The shoulders will be expanded by up to two feet on each side, with an asphalt surface being applied. This expansion aims to offer drivers additional recovery space if their vehicles veer off the travel lanes, thus reducing crash risks.
According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), work will begin as early as 9 a.m. tomorrow, June 10, with operations conducted within a mobile work zone. During this period, travelers should expect one-way alternating traffic controlled by a flagging crew. The construction activities are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, for approximately four weeks, weather permitting.
This endeavor is a collaborative effort between VDOT and Stafford County. Initial phases will focus on shoulder widening before proceeding with the resurfacing of Stefaniga Road. A new asphalt layer will cover the widened sections to ensure uniformity and enhance the smoothness of the road surface. Additionally, new centerline and edge line markings will be painted for improved visibility.
Completion of the safety project is anticipated by mid-July. Currently, Stefaniga Road accommodates an average daily traffic volume of 3,600 vehicles between Mountain View Road and Poplar Road, based on recent VDOT traffic data.
